Thailand Travel Destination – Koh Bulon Lae

May 24, 2020 by John Telford

Thailand is without doubt a beautiful and diverse country, ever popular as a holiday destination. Its better known tourist locations are well documented and have been enjoyed by millions of people for many, many years. But the wants, needs and desires of the tourist evolve, and this evolution has found visitors looking for something that differs from the well-trodden tourist hotspots.

There is now a great deal more focus on the kingdom’s islands. Of course some are already well known, Phuket and Krabi to name just two. But Thailand has 1430 islands that sit in its coastal waters. Many of these islands are unspoilt, uncommercialized and epitomize Thailand’s natural beauty.

Lapped by the blue waters of the Andaman Sea, to the Southwest of Phuket and part of Surat Province, lies Koh Bulon Lae. A visitor is unlikely to find a more natural location, one which is almost entirely untouched by modernity or the commercial giants that view each visitor as part of their ledger’s bottom line.

If you enjoy glitzy shopping malls, beer swilling on a bar crawl, beach parties or the thumping music spewing from neon lit nightclubs, then give Koh Bulon Lae a wide birth. Wild hedonism is not to be found here, nor are cars, there are no cars on the island, no ATMs and definitely no 7-11s. With everything that the island doesn’t have, it has become much loved by singles, couples and families as a rare gem of a place to be enjoyed and cherished simply for what it is. Paradise!

The island is tiny, you can walk from one side to the other in around 20 minutes, and in taking such a walk you will go from pristine beaches, to mangrove, swamp and dense jungle, such diversity in a small area is astonishing. When visiting the island, a walk from coast to coast is a must.

Meander along the trail that cuts across the island to see and feel the diversity of the island. The one thing that is striking is the noise, with every decibel being given by nature. Shrieking bird calls are endless, the millions of cicadas create a cacophony of noise that most people never experience. You are also likely to encounter the large, but harmless, monitor lizards that lounge around the mangroves.

Getting to Koh Bulon Lae

Traveling to Surat Province is straight forward. There are many bus and minivan services to the area, many of which can be booked to take you straight to Pakbara pier. There are flight services to Hat Yai and Trang from where transfers can be taken to Pakbara. It is from Pakbara pier that the power boats make the short crossing to Koh Bulon Lae. The power boats are met just off the beach by longtail boats to ferry visitors ashore.

There are also inter-island boat services that connect the many islands that lie off the West coast of the Kra Isthmus. Island hopping has become a popular way to explore the kingdom away from its mainland, thus, from the mainland or any of the Andaman Sea islands, getting to Koh Bulon Lae is without problem.

Where to stay on Koh Bulon Lae

Many of the island’s visitors are backpackers on a budget, and they are well accommodated. Between Panka Yai Bay and Mango Bay, set on the forested trail are the Jungle Huts. Basic but entirely adequate, these homely residences are the bargain stay option on the island. Yes, staying here does require a walk to the beach, but on Koh Bulon Lae there is no such thing as a long walk!

School Beach is the islands best beach, and one of the most beautiful in the whole of Thailand, not surprisingly the cost of accommodation here tends to be higher. Although, close by is Panka Noi Bay, which offers excellent accommodation at very reasonable rates. Go just a little further North to Panka Yai Bay and visitors can enjoy the cheapest bungalows on the island. Visitors planning a trip to the island should be aware that many places close up between June or July, through to October.

Koh Bulon Lae, What to Do

Koh Bulon Lae is not about expelling boundless levels of energy, quite the contrary in fact. The most energetic activity you are likely to indulge in will be swimming and snorkeling in the island’s silky blue waters. Visitors can hire a kayak and paddle around the island with ease and explore its quiet coves, above and below the water.

Trekking is popular, and you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to trek across the island. Trek at your own pace and enjoy being enveloped by unspoilt natural beauty. You may even hear the island spirits that are said to whisper in the gentle breeze.

Undoubtedly, most visitors love the pristine beaches and pure white sand. Lap up the sun, loose yourself in quiet contemplation, meditate and be at peace with the world. For any explorer coming to the Kingdom of Thailand that is seeking natural tranquility, it is Koh Bulon Lae.

Five Adventure Sports to Try Whilst Visiting Thailand

June 5, 2018 by John Telford

If you are into all things adventurous and getting your adrenaline pumping, then Thailand is a great place to visit. With many adventure sports and amazing places that get your heart pumping whilst discovering the beauty of Thailand, there has never been a better time to get yourself out there. Here are five of the best adventure sports to try when visiting Thailand, and where is best to do them.

Diving, Koh Tao

Now, diving may not seem like an adventure sport, but in Koh Tao, free diving has been incredibly popular. Free diving is diving in coral reefs without an oxygen tank. This gives you the ability to glide a lot faster through the water to discover everything underneath. The longest free dive was around 20 minutes, but even a few minutes at a time freediving is enough to get your heart racing.

Off-Road Motorbiking, Northern Thailand

In Northern Thailand there are some of the biggest and thickest jungles in the country. These make for a great track for some off-road motorbiking. There are some recommended routes for those wishing to take on this adventure, such as The Golden Triangle which is 390 miles long. This takes you down windy roads to caves and elephant camps and is a thrilling and exciting way to discover Thailand.

Waterfall Abseiling, Chiang Mai

This is truly an adrenaline addict’s dream. Abseiling and rappelling underneath a beautiful waterfall in the middle of a Thai jungle can give you a thrill like no other. If you have ever rappelled down a cliff, this has got nothing on doing so whilst underneath a huge waterfall.

Deep Water Soloing

This can be done anywhere and is a newer sport. This is a lot like rock climbing, but in much more extreme and beautiful places. Deep water soloing is a form of free-climbing that involves scaling and climbing cliff faces without a harness or anchors to help you. This is all done in the sea so you will need a boat to get to a cliff face. If you fall, you’ll just get wet. The only way down is to jump back into the sea meaning this adventure sport is thrilling but completely safe when done correctly. Railay beach is a great place to start your journey and there are many friendly locals who will show you the way.

Longtail Drag Boat Racing

This is a motorsport that is ever popular in Thailand. As its name suggests, this is drag boat racing to the extreme. Many of the boats are made custom by the locals to win and bring customers to their shops. Whether you want to join in and build your own, Thai Boat Racing is certainly a delight to watch.

Thailand is an amazing place full of adventure for those wishing to find it. Whatever sport you are interested in, Thailand has something for you. Discover Thailand and get your adrenaline pumping with any of these great adventure sports.

The Most Romantic Experiences in Thailand

December 11, 2017 by John Telford

Are you looking for a romantic getaway with your special someone in South East Asia? Perhaps you’re celebrating an anniversary or just want to escape from the stresses of life back at home. If this sounds like you, your dream destination is Thailand. You can book a beautiful rental in thailand near the beach or a luxurious hotel in Bangkok to unwind for a week or two. So, before you pack your bags and jump on the plane, check out the following romantic experiences to make your trip even more special.

Sunset Stroll on the Beach

What can be more romantic than walking along the soft sandy beach with the warm waters gently lapping on the shoe? You’re hand in hand with palm trees to one side and the darkening blue water of the sea to the other. The scenery is incredible, and you’re walking in the very definition of a tropical paradise. Watching the sunset is a romantic experience anywhere in the world. But, that feeling is magnified in Thailand. If you’re staying at a beachside resort or vacation rental, sit on your balcony and enjoy the magical experience with a glass of wine.

Watch the Sunrise

Watching the sunrise is equally as romantic as the sunset, but few people make it out of bed. The sun often rises before 6:00 am when most are still fast asleep. If you can get up, watching the sun light up Thailand’s natural beauty as the day breaks is unforgettable. Sometimes you may be able to see both the sunrise and sunset on the same beach depending on where you are. Other times you may need to travel to find the perfect spot.

Join Bangkok’s Private River Cruise

River cruises are a favourite pastime in Bangkok for tourists. Some take you on a sightseeing tour of the city whereas others have a romantic dinner. If you know the right places and aren’t on a budget, you might be able to get yourself a private boat. Picture sitting on comfortable leather seats being whisked around Bangkok’s network of canals and rivers while enjoying time with your partner. Boat rides are nice, but nothing can quite beat the feeling of exclusivity on a private one.

Sip Cocktails at a Rooftop Bar

Another romantic experience in Bangkok is to head to the Central District and go to The Moon Bar. This is an exceptional spot for a drink. The outdoor bar has 360-degree views from the 61st floor and claims to be one of the world’s highest outdoor bars. Drinks are, as expected, expensive but the price is worth it. You can sit on one of the cushioned sofas with a drink or have a candlelit table with incredible views. If you’re planning to spend any time in Bangkok, checking out The Moon Bar is a must.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai makes a great spot for couples with beautiful mountainous landscapes, a historical centre and a laid-back city a million miles away from Bangkok’s noise and pollution. Apart from enjoying the temples, hiking trails and renting a motorbike to explore the province, you can go on a hot air balloon tour. Tour packages include a short flight taking you high over the mountains and hills of Chiang Mai to give a bird’s eye view of the incredible landscapes below. Some packages offer private tours and have an after-flight meal. If you have never taken a hot air balloon ride before, now’s your chance to tick it off the bucket list in style.

Spend a Day at the Spa

Thai massages are available on almost every street around the country. Locals will give you a massage on the beach or in their own shop. But, Thailand is also famous for having world-class spas and wellness centres that are some of the best in South East Asia. You can have a massage and the full treatment with various types of therapies and relaxation techniques. If you and your partner are looking for a few days of recuperation, book yourselves into one of Thailand’s spas for some pampering. Most of the luxurious hotels have an onsite spa, which you should take advantage of at least once during your trip. And when you’re both super refreshed and relaxed, what can be better than a candlelit dinner or rooftop cocktails?

Stay on a Secluded Island

There are thousands of islands in Thailand catering for different tourist interests. Some host the Full Moon Party attracting backpackers and younger travellers for a night of fun. Others are much quieter and have a very high level of luxury. It’s safe to say that you’ll find what you’re looking for on one of Thailand’s islands. But, if you want romance and privacy, check out some of the less visited spots. There are hundreds of places around Thailand’s archipelagos where very few tourists visit including Koh Samet, the Koh Yao Islands and Koh Similan. It’s also possible to find a beachfront rental or resort with a private beach on the more famous islands like Phuket and Koh Samui.

Having the Most Romantic Trip of Your Life

If you’re looking for romance, Thailand has it. From the secluded spots on tropical islands to Bangkok’s rooftop bars and Chiang Mai’s hot air balloon tours, you’ll find something to have a memorable trip. Be sure to see the sunrise and sunset at least once and have a day or two at the spa. Follow these suggestions, and you’re sure to have the most romantic time of your lives.

Fun things to do in Thailand for those who don’t drink alcohol

October 15, 2017 by John Telford

A great many tourists who go to Thailand are looking to indulge in some of its finest party places. This is completely understandable and as someone who has spent a great deal of time in Thailand, I can understand why so many people love letting their hair down in this country. But what about those who don’t drink alcohol? As someone who doesn’t drink, it can be difficult to join in with others when it all gets a bit crazy. Thankfully there is plenty that the country can offer for the tee totals amongst us and here are just a few things which you must do when you go to Thailand.

The Grand Palace

You will see many temples and religious buildings when you go to Thailand, but noting quite like the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This building complex has stood for over 150 years and it was the home of the Thai King and the Royal Court. The buildings are decadent in their design with gold featuring just about everywhere. If you only visit one place in Bangkok, make sure that it is the Grand Palace.

Floating Markets

Heading to the north of Bangkok you will find the incredible Floating Markets, colorful, noisy and something that you have never seen before. The vendors here use small, gondola-type boats which they will pile high with fruits, vegetables and handmade items to sell at the shore. Here you can haggle and purchase some great products, in a really novel way.

Visit Phi Phi

These glorious islands can be found 45 minutes away by boat from Phuket and you don’t need to drink any alcohol to realize that these are probably the most beautiful islands in Southeast Asia. The islands are made with volcanic rock which gives them their dramatic features, perfectly complimented by the green sea that laps against the beaches. If you are traveling with your partner, these are the islands where you need to go.

Khao Yai National Park

This vast national park is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site and at over 2,000 square meters, it is the second biggest national park in the country. The region actually spans four provinces and inside the park you will find pure tranquility and natural beauty. Throughout the park there are mountain ranges, lush forests and swooping valleys where you can take some time away from the world.

Elephant Reserve

Much has been said about the way in which animals are treated in many of the operations that exist throughout Thailand so it is nice to see a center doing things differently. This is exactly what you will find in the northern city of Chiang Mai where there is an elephant reserve which rescues and cares for mistreated elephants. Unlike most elephant shows, the animals here will be acting naturally and themselves thanks to the care and freedom that the owners of the reserve have given them. The animal tourism industry in Thailand is not in good shape and visiting places like this will hopefully help to change more minds.

So there you have it, no need to party, this country has much more to offer.
