VIBE
What started in the 1890s as a humble novelty store has grown into the epitome of the classic Parisian department store. The early 20th century architecture (think sweeping Art Nouveau staircases and a glass-and-steel domed roof) is fittingly monumental, and the collection of designerwear appropriately fashion forward. The collections here are more accessible than other historic department stores around town, although the new “Espace Luxe” on the first floor has brought in a larger selection of couture and avant garde pieces.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Good mix of couture and more accessible (and affordable) ready-to-wear fashions. We’re particularly smitten with the vast basement shoe emporium (oh là là!) and the smart menswear department on the third floor.
GOOD TO KNOW
Galeries Lafayette have a great selection of lines by Parisian designers, so if you don’t have time to crisscross the city boutique-hopping, this is a good one-stop-shop option. If you need a mid-shop snack, check out the posh food hall, Lafayette Gourmet.
