VIBE
This Palm Beach landmark possesses a legacy unsurpassed by other local oceanfront hotels. Though the original 1896 structure built by oil magnate and Palm Beach founder Henry Flagler burned down in 1925, the hotel was completely reconstructed the very next year, and a trip down its palm-lined drive still inspires awe. With over 140 acres of grounds, 500 rooms, five oceanfront swimming pools, nine restaurants, two championship golf courses (one off-property), a full-service spa, and its own luxury shopping arcade, the twin-spire titan that is The Breakers is unquestionably the grande dame of Palm Beach resorts.

WHY WE LIKE IT
Despite its venerable age, The Breakers makes a true commitment to ensure its guests enjoy the best modern amenities a hotel can offer. Over the past ten years, it’s spent over USD 250 million on upgrades to its guestrooms and public spaces, successfully marrying palatial accents (like Venetian chandeliers, carved ceilings, and gold leaf in sitting rooms) with refreshingly modern design (guestrooms are furnished with white, taupe, and cream-colored linens, while private poolside cabanas come complete with flat-screen televisions and concierge service). All this, and in a central location close to the fantastic shopping and dining on Worth Avenue to boot!
AMENITY WE LOVE
The Mediterranean-style Beach Club, with its half mile of private beach, its five pools, and its grand cabanas and beach bungalows, has to come out tops (after all, what’s an oceanfront resort without its beach?).
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
An automatic 20% service charge is added to most extras (spa treatments, meals, bar drinks, etc.)–and while you aren’t expected to tip on top of this, the service incentive can sometimes be lacking. Further, given the high price of the hotel, we don’t like the extra fee to use the spa facilities and oceanfront fitness center (day access included with a spa treatment, however). Note that there is a gym in the main hotel that guests can access for free.
GOOD TO KNOW
On an island already famed for its deep-pocketed tourists, The Breakers is known for hosting the most exclusive clientele in town. In addition to its vast onsite services and amenities, The Breakers also hosts a busy schedule of conferences and corporate events and runs a full program of activities and entertainment for families and groups (this is a favorite family travel destination). We would avoid this place during the week after Christmas, when prices are through the roof and it is extremely crowded (and borderline chaotic).
