VIBE
Rosa Mexicano’s attractive space (by David Rockwell, no less) soars thanks to architectural theatrics like a 30-foot blue tile “water wall” and a “floating” staircase. The food is packed with traditional earthy flavors like cilantro and yellow-pepper habanero, and dishes like the enchiladas suizas are truly tasty, though they seem to be mere afterthoughts, what with the famous guacamole (prepared tableside in lava-stone molcajetes) taking the starring role. There are over 70 tequilas and a potent selection of margaritas to choose from, so you won’t be short on drinks to wash it all down.
CROWD
An eclectic mix of Upper West Siders, Mexican food lovers, fun-loving friends, and chic families. Celebs have been known to stop by (including the likes of Mike Meyers).
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Stylish casual; go with a flirty top, designer pants, and some funky accessories.
GO HERE WITH
A group of friends; family; kids; significant other; a fun date
WHY WE LIKE IT
This is Mexican dining at its classiest. And those potent margaritas are easy to love. A great spot to kick back and have some fun.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The mains, though quite tasty, do not measure up to the appetizers or bar snacks (particularly the guacamole).
GOOD TO KNOW
The strength of the tasty margaritas is an open secret among locals. Though chic, the restaurant is kid-friendly, offering a children’s menu. A gluten-free menu, delivery, and takeout are all available. If it’s just the guacamole and the margaritas you’re after, stop in at the bar: as long as it’s not too busy, you can get it served there. If we’re coming for a full meal, we prefer to sit in the main dining room upstairs, not in the smaller space at the back of the ground floor.
