    VIBE

The masterful chefs at this tranquil sushi den certainly meet–and usually exceed–the high expectations of the sushi fanatics who pack in. With a central location right off Times Square and near the office buildings on Sixth Avenue, the 10-seat counter is never empty, and Chef Toshio Suzuki himself ensures that every meal is worth squishing in for. His specialty is rolls, both American-style and Japanese, and he’s introduced more than 150 new varieties since founding Sushi Zen. But what the connoisseurs are really seeking here is the omakase, which, though it costs a pretty penny, is artfully tailored to individual taste and leaves no guest wanting.

    CROWD

A handful of business folk from around the neighborhood mixed with sushi fanatics, lunchers, and daters.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Most guests sport conservative business attire, but you could dress it up a bit with a stylish top, or a flashy accessory or two.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Every bite of sushi is sublime, and the non-sushi dishes are just as delightful. Plus, the atmosphere is as refined as the extensive menu.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

It’s a bit overpriced for the amount of food you get (though keep in mind that this is Midtown). Service is rumored to be spotty (we had a bit of a time trying to get our check). Also, lunch has a very corporate atmosphere, which can be a little off-putting, especially if you are going for a more congenial get-together.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The omakase does not have a set price, so be sure to specify your price point before letting the chef work his magic (and run up the bill).
