VIBE
It makes sense that this West Village Malaysian joint attracts the hippest foodie types; after all, given the too-cool-to-care touches like the indie rock soundtrack, the open kitchen, and the scruffy, casually clothed staff, it definitely seems like that’s the crowd they’re angling for. Of course, what really draws those cool foodies is the food: Fatty Crab takes the delicate art of small plate dining and brings it to a new level of messy, spicy goodness. Critics from all over bow down to their glorified street food, which includes morsels like fatty duck, chili crab, rib rendang, and a slew of other Southeast Asian-inspired dishes.
CROWD
A mix of Village hipsters, foodies, and couples on dates.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
It’s cool casual; go for an oversized sweater, jeans, and flats. The food is a hands-on affair (meaning messy), so don’t sport anything you can’t wash easily.

WHY WE LIKE IT
We love how Fatty Crab goes all out to make this an authentic Malaysian dining experience, from making all condiments and pastes from scratch to encouraging eating with your hands.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
While the crowded, busy ambiance is fun, a little more room to stretch out after the meal would be welcome.
GOOD TO KNOW
The chili crab is the specialty of the house, so if you’re going for the first time, you might want to consider seeing what all the fuss is about. That said, if you’re shy about getting a little down and dirty with your food, this is definitely not a first date dish; if you’re less modest and willing to give it a go, though, it is oh-so-worth-it. This venue serves late and offers a great weekend brunch. Reservations are not accepted here, but they are taken at the Upper West Side location.
