    VIBE

This worldly retreat, hidden along the stretch where Chinatown borders the Lower East Side, serves up tropical cocktails and spicy, succulent dishes from France, Brazil and the African diaspora. The colonial jungle oasis surrounds are fit to match: an earthy brown and natural ivory room, decked out in palm fronds, sand-colored seats, railings reminiscent of zebra stripes, and a collection of colorful, primitive masks. More urbane are the suave waitstaff and moody European artworks hanging over the drinkers nursing their sweet cocktails along the circular bar.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Keep it Downtown casual with a light shift top, white or khaki pants, fancy flats, and a colorful bangle or two.

    CROWD

LES locals, cocktail connoisseurs, and a fair share of romantic twosomes.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The place is cute and cozy but can easily turn quite festive. It feels like a neighborhood spot, but it draws hip people from around town. The food, especially the Brazilian moqueca (our go-to dish), is flavorful and hearty. And the creative cocktails? They alone are worth the trek Downtown (as are the more traditional caipirinhas and mojitos).

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

It lies deep in the Lower East Side so getting here can be a long haul if you’re not in the neighborhood.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The African and Brazilian elements are inspired by the travels of owners Stefan Jonot and Fabrice Vautrin. The full menu is offered until midnight; the bar menu is available until close. There’s a DJ spinning world music most nights. The bar accepts cash and AMEX only.
