VIBE
Despite its tough-to-find address–it’s hidden on a shadowy back alley off Rivington Street–the after-dark scene at Freemans has risen up the ladder of New York’s nightlife food chain to become one of the hotter spots in the area. Though the bar is snug (it seats just twelve) and the décor a bit too quirky (the proprietors seem to have a fixation with overly worn wooden furniture and suspended taxidermy), the superb, eclectic wine and seasonal cocktails (which are dissected into categories of Light and Easy, Even and Crisp, and Dark and Complex) more than make up for such minor irritations.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
A stylish casual look; a chic patterned top or tunic, denims, and boots.

CROWD
Hip locals, comfort foodies, and weekend brunchers.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Its old school, eccentric surrounds match the edgy types who frequent it. If you really want a taste of the Lower East Side’s funky style scene, this resto-bar is the place to be.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Reservations are not accepted unless you’re showing up with a large group, making seats notoriously hard to come by (especially at the bar). We suggest leaving those killer heels at home–long waits are almost guaranteed after dark.
GOOD TO KNOW
Though there are some pricey wines stocked here, most of the bottles are super affordable (within the USD 30-50 range).
