Housed in the former Maritime Union headquarters–a pleasingly retro 1960s landmark in the Meatpacking District–this property from local boutique hotel kings Eric Goode and Sean MacPhaerson (of The Jane and Lafayette House) matches insider cool with nautical kitsch. The result is a slick vintage luxury liner of a hotel, complete with a slew of swinging hangouts, posh portholed rooms, and (obviously) décor that’s heavy on blue. At nearly a decade old, The Maritime is approaching grandmother status in boutique years, and it shows in a slow-down in the flood of models and actors who once poured in, but the luxe facilities and rooms remain in tip-top condition. Aside from the tell-tale views of the city seen from the porthole windows, you truly do feel like a guest on an ultra-hip cruise liner.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Whether or not the in-crowd has taken their party elsewhere, we think The Maritime is still pretty slick. The rooms are pleasingly plush (and have cool quirky features like vintage copies of National Geographic), and the onsite dining and nightlife are stellar. (A sizable stock of various vintage publications are also available in the lobby for guests’ reading pleasure.)

AMENITY WE LOVE

The slew of onsite restaurants and bars. (We dig how even the outdoor venues are available year round: Cabanas Roof Bar is sheltered by skylights, and during the winter months La Bottega has heaters and is enclosed.)

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The rooms are a little more cramped than similar lodgings in this price bracket and are starting to show their age.

GOOD TO KNOW

For the directionally sensitive, know that all rooms face westward, offering views of the Hudson River and New Jersey. If you want a more spacious room, book one of the penthouses, which come complete with private terraces and outdoor showers. A business center, a range of private event spaces, and bicycle rental are all available. Pets under 30lbs are welcome free of charge.
