VIBE
Like many historic hotels in the city, the Essex House is a colorful character in New York lore–it was one of the first places in town to serve brunch (a meal originally targeted at Central Park strollers), a slew of legendary folks (like Igor Stravinsky) have lived here, and its iconic six-story red neon rooftop sign has had more film spots than most Hollywood stars. Nonetheless, after a recent USD 90 million refurbishment by new owners Jumeirah, the clientele has shifted from well-heeled ramblers and cultural icons to jetsetting power scene types. A slick new business center offers some of the finest workspace in town, the newly restored Art Deco lobby and bar were expressly designed to facilitate networking and hobnobbing, and the plush spa offers an ideal post-work wind-down.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The sterling business amenities make this an excellent choice if you’re in town for work. That said, the fabulous Midtown location (just across from Central Park!) is also a plus if you’re interested in sightseeing or shopping. (Try to snag a room with a view for fantastic photos of the park and skyline.) And of course, if you’re traveling with kids, having one of the world’s largest urban parks at your doorstep is ideal.
AMENITY WE LOVE
The 24-hour business center, complete with secretarial services, private offices, and meeting space.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
If you don’t opt for one of the pricier suites, your much-hyped “view” may be limited to a brick wall.
GOOD TO KNOW
The hotel has changed hands a few times; before becoming the Jumeirah Essex House, it was a Marriott, a Nikko, and a Westin. With 16 rooms to choose from and space for up to 550 guests, the onsite event and conference facilities are excellent. In collaboration with CentralPark.com, the hotel offers walking tours of the park. One for the art buffs: Jumeirah runs an “artist in residence” program and puts up interesting exhibitions of their in-house art collection.
