    VIBE

Opened in the 1970s by a collective of colorful artworld characters like Sol LeWitt and Lucy Lippard, Printed Matter is a funky non-profit bookstore-cum-gallery devoted to showcasing artists’ publications. True to their egalitarian mission statement, glossy volumes by well-known artists are stacked beside low-budget folios from obscure creatives (many of them published by Printed Matter’s own press). The reading room holds over 20,000 volumes (by 6,000 artists), all of which are available for viewing or purchase, while the gallery space usually features exhibitions by local artists.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

We totally dig its art world in-crowd vibes. (Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot some of NYC’s most famous creatives browsing the stacks.) There are thought-provoking finds to be had here, whether you’re a serious collector of artistic artifacts or just browsing for an offbeat read (and because many of the works here are handcrafted by unknowns, prices run cheap).

    GOOD TO KNOW

Printed Matter also runs a wide range of events, including in-store lectures by well-known writers, artists, critics, and curators. They also have an open submissions policy for artists looking to publish–check the website for more info if you’re considering sending something in. Discounts and invitations to exhibitions, openings, and special events are available for members.
