    VIBE

From the outstanding quality of its American-with-a-touch-of-Italian cuisine to the genuine warmth and hospitality it extends to its teeming throngs of touristy diners, Union Square Café passes the test of consistency with flying colors. No wonder it held first place on the Zagat Survey for New York’s Most Popular Restaurant eight years in a row. As restaurateur Danny Meyer’s first venture, it’s beginning to show some wear and tear and the rooms feel cramped, but it remains one of the most well-known and best-loved restaurants in the city–a perfect option for refined Manhattanites and visitors alike.

    CROWD

An eclectic mix of business lunchers, singles, couples, Meyer’s loyal fans, families out for a special occasion, and maybe even a celeb or two.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

The majority of diners tends to dress up a bit; go stylish in a fashionable top, skirt, high heels, and a clutch.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Its dependable food and service (both consistently outstanding) make this restaurant a sure bet. Whether you’re dining here for lunch or dinner, on a date or for a family get-together, it’s pretty much guaranteed that your time and money will be well spent.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Getting a reservation can be a challenge. (It books up immediately, so try to reserve a month ahead of time if you can.)

    GOOD TO KNOW

There’s a long, healthy list of vegetarian options available. If you don’t have a reservation, there is a chance you can score a seat at the no-reservations-accepted bar, which offers the full menu during dining hours and is a great option for solo diners. Please note that you are requested to not use cell phones within the restaurant. Weekend brunch is now available; we adored the brioche French toast and the crispy polenta with maple syrup.

    CLOSEST COMPS

Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca (New York); Gramercy Tavern (New York)
