    VIBE

Romantic twosomes and the Flatiron District’s lively lunch set pack in to take advantage of the sophisticated surrounds and semi-private nooks at this elegantly modern Indian restaurant. The coolly neutral interior is blanketed in the soft, creamy tones of traditional Indian textiles and gauzy curtains, while the impressively authentic, if eclectic, menu is a more colorful affair; it features sweet and spicy flavors from all over northern and southern India, including bites like gingery okra and traditional tandoori. Vegetarians will find a long list of selections here.

    CROWD

A lively mix of lunching ladies, couples, small groups of friends, and the Flatiron business set.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Upscale casual; go for a classy top, chic pants or a skirt, and comfortable flats.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

We love the semi-private raised banquettes that sit along the edge of the restaurant. A great spot for a small group dinner.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The prices are pretty high compared with other Indian restaurants in the area. Not the best value-for-money option.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Owner Avatar Walia named his restaurant after the tamarind in deference to the fruit’s value to Indian cuisine (the tamarind’s seeds and pulp are key ingredients in many dishes). Prices have gone up over the years, but the lunch prix fixe remains a great option, as do the bargain-priced snacks in the adjacent tearoom. Takeout and delivery are available.
