    VIBE

Considering that this is a cuisine that is seemingly required to be served in rustic surrounds, this chic Italian spot in Nolita (almost) bucks the trend by melding touches of urban modernity with its country charms: think sleek steel chairs set against old school brick walls and an open kitchen with salumi hanging from hooks. The hearty cooking of chef-owner Frank De Carlo retains the rustic authenticity that eaters and expats of Italy have grown to expect from their favorite establishments (no doubt this restaurant is one of them)–look for tried-and-true plates like porchetta and pizza margarita.

    CROWD

Groups gathered for conversation and great food, Italian comfort diners, and romantic daters and couples.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

This is a true date-night destination; opt for a stylish ensemble like a form-fitting top, sleek skirt, heels, and some sparkling earrings.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The mix of rustic country with urban chic. The surroundings are romantic, stylish, and pleasant without being overdone.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

It can get a touch loud, although we’ve heard through the grapevine that some soundproofing improvements have been made, so this may no longer be an issue.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Apart from the main ground-level dining room, Peasant also runs a cozy wine bar, Peasant Wine Bar, in the basement. (Small plates are available in the wine bar.)
