    VIBE

This Chinese chain has won its way into the hearts of serious foodies and spicy food lovers alike with its authentic and tastebud-awakening flavors like chili sauces laced with Sichuan peppercorns. The Chelsea location is a bit classier, but this Midtown branch stands out thanks to its equally good fare, sleek and pleasant dining room, and its fantastic location close to New York’s biggest theaters.

    CROWD

Sichuan food lovers, spicy food daredevils, and Chinese expats

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Casual; you’d be safe wearing a fun top, jeans, and funky flats. Wear something dark colored or else risk having a chili oil-splattered top.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The Sichuan dishes are intense, with authentic made-in-China spiciness. When we’re here with friends who don’t necessarily dig Sichuan spice, we appreciate the “American Chinese” food section of the menu. (Plus, it’s a little lesson in the difference between authentic Chinese food and “American Chinese” food.)

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

We wish the lunch specials had some of the traditional Sichuan dishes included.

    GOOD TO KNOW

It’s two avenues west of Broadway and quite speedy, so it’s good for a pre- or post-theater dinner. Be sure to bring tissues, as you will need them after some of the fiery dishes.
