VIBE
What used to be a “secret” tavern hidden on a dark stretch on Lower East Side’s Freeman Alley has now become a much-sought-after (and consequently overpopulated) hipster hotspot. But no matter, the atmosphere remains very much intact. From the taxidermy-covered walls to the assorted bric-a-brac (like faded wallpaper and photographs) cluttering the space, every detail contributes to Freemans’s distinct country taste for funky vintage (think a Manhattan take on the mountain cabin or New England cottage). The menu is hearty, the cocktails potent, and the generously sized dishes too big to finish. Plus, the hipster wait staff are fast, friendly, and unwaveringly professional despite the unending crowds.
CROWD
Freemans is cool enough for everyone, no matter the age or wallet-size; that said, scruffy yet gorgeous Lower East Siders certainly make their mark here.
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
The true hidden gem magic is gone; Freeman’s is certainly no longer a secret.

WHY WE LIKE IT
The killer cocktail bar. There is never a bad cocktail served here (don’t miss the Bloody Marys!), and word is, whatever you ask for, they’ll whip up something even better. Now that’s our kind of bartender!
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
The true hidden gem magic is gone; Freeman’s is certainly no longer a secret.
GOOD TO KNOW
The artichoke dip has a cult following. Do. Not. Miss it. Also, arrive as early as you can; there’s a no-reservations policy, so the main dining room is strictly walk-in only, and only completed parties will be seated. Both bars offer the full restaurant menu.
