VIBE
This neighborhood brasserie teems with conversation as locals take their time chatting between bites of the Franco-American fare. The fashionably worn décor incorporates classic French design elements like vintage posters and mirrors, making for a comfortable bistro vibe. Happy hour hipsters crowd the long bar, which is crowned by a display of suspended glass bottles, contributing a brilliant rainbow color to the otherwise golden glow of the restaurant. The kitchen cooks up brasserie staples like poulet rotis and charcuterie as well as paying homage to the restaurant’s namesake province with Alsatian specialties like baeckoffe. In the warmer months, the sidewalk tables are filled with happy diners.
CROWD
Sometimes boisterous scene of 30-somethings, neighborhood Upper East Siders, and brunching couples
WHAT WE WOULD WEAR
Stylish, Upper-East-Side casual; a fitted shirt, capris, flats, and tasteful everyday jewelry.
GO HERE WITH
Friends; coworkers; significant other; a date; yourself
WHY WE LIKE IT
The bar itself, with its colorful bottles, is the focus of the interior. And looks, it turns out, are not deceiving: the bar offers a selection of more than 110 beers, mostly from Belgium, which is both extensive and distinguished. Need help choosing? Just ask the savvy barkeeps.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Sometimes the wait for a table can be a touch irritating, especially if you want to just pop in for a quick drink or bite.
GOOD TO KNOW
This is one of nine restaurants in the city’s Tour De France group (representing the culinary tour of New York’s best in French cooking). The outdoor space, open during good weather, is seated on a first-come, first-served basis, so make sure to arrive early to guarantee your sidewalk spot.
