    VIBE

This 2,000-square-foot apartment in Grand Central Terminal was formerly the private office of 1920s banker and tycoon John W. Campbell, and a dramatic million dollar restoration has turned it into one of the prettiest spots in New York as well as one of the city’s more popular “secrets.” Underneath the beamed, plaster-of-paris ceiling, elegantly suited commuters and young professionals congregate to imbibe post-work cocktails from the glamorous Gatsby era. The arched stained glass faux-windows are gothic and gorgeous, while the mood lighting filtering through the actual wall-sized window of foggy leaded glass complements the surrounding mahogany woodwork, tapestry upholstery, and antique rugs.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

Business attire, meaning anything dark, flattering, and well cut. No man is seen here without a collared shirt, pleated pants, or just-shined shoes. Ladies sport their professional best, so ensembles would best be accessorized with jewels and heels. (Sneakers, jeans, and t-shirts are prohibited.)

    CROWD

It’s a suit-and-tie crowd on the weekdays, though the weekends slow down to include a mix of mature couples out on the town.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

In our humble opinion, it’s one of Manhattan’s best spots to cocktail post-work. It really does evoke the splendor of Old New York with its beautifully hand-painted ceiling and Campbell’s personal safe situated beneath the massive stone fireplace.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Due to its popularity, it collects quite a crowd, especially on weekday afternoons when the after-workers stop in for a drink.

    GOOD TO KNOW

A live jazz trio performs on Saturday nights from 9:00pm-midnight, making for a lovely post-dinner drink with friends. If you’re interested in drinking alfresco, try the cushy terrace overlooking Vanderbilt Avenue. Any of the original house drinks are recommended, though we strongly suggest trying the “Flapper’s Delight”, or going classic with a Manhattan (one of the more perfect versions we’ve tasted). The Campbell Apartment is part of the Hospitality Holdings collection of nightlife venues that also includes The Empire Room, The World Bar, The Carnegie Club, Bookmarks, and Madison & Vine (all in New York).
