Quirky German beer hall serving dependably good traditional fare and foamy brews.
Novelist Glenway Wescott once wrote, “New York City is a great apartment hotel in which everyone lives and no one is at home.” It’s an apt comparison, as the cramped quarters of most New York apartments are incentive enough for spending as little time at home as possible. But we’d wager that the “everyone's-out” atmosphere of New York has a great deal more to do with the incredible nightlife options that coax New Yorkers to hit the town.
As history shows, no one’s really been home in New York for decades. In the Roaring Twenties, speakeasies and jazz joints jumped with flappers. In the ’30s though ’50s, mid-century cocktail dens drew high rollers for highballs. For swinging ’60s Mad Men-era socialites, cocktail hour began at breakfast. From the disco ’70s to the Sex and the City ’90s, velvet-roped dance clubs and lounges with fruity concoctions were the order of the day. As nightlife in New York continues to evolve, all of these influences are being shaken and stirred to yield the current mix of sizzling lounges, casual neighborhood bars, underground mixology havens, cavernous dance clubs, and old New York throwbacks. Great nightlife venues are so ubiquitous, in fact, that for most Manhattanites, they’re extensions of home.
The plush surrounds of the city's hottest lounges will make you feel right at home. At Rose Bar, a beloved abode of nightlife elite ensconced in the Gramercy Park Hotel, you can cozy up to the massive fireplace or scope starlets and moguls draped over the velvet furniture (that is, if your “look” and/or connections get you in). Luxurious oriental daybeds provide a home-away-from-home (albeit a rather decadent, Shanghai Deco home) feel to the terrace at Salon de Ning, a rooftop lounge with stunning views perched atop The Peninsula New York. At Hudson Bar, it’s as if the spaceship has landed–Versailles-like furnishings over the glowing white floor evoke a futuristic living room.
But if you want true hominess, you might feel more comfortable at one of New York’s more laidback watering holes. Lillie’s, a 19th century Irish pub with a neighborhood feel, boasts comforts-of-home touches (in the Victorian sense) like marble fireplaces and carved wooden furniture. A Victorian sensibility also pervades The Dove Parlour, where tables (topped with doilies!) are arranged for intimate chatting and the excellent boutique wines and draft beers provide further incentive for fraternizing. Canoodling couples can get cozy on the sofas at candlelit wine bar the room, a locals’ favorite offering wine selections from around the world.
While the beers and wines at these kickback neighborhood spots certainly satisfy, you might want to up the alcohol ante and explore some of the city's mind-blowing mixology havens. These cutting-edge cocktailing spots may not exactly be homey, but many of them have "no-standing" policies that at least preserve the civilized sit-down. Plus, the attention to drink-mixing detail is so profound that the from-scratch concoctions tend to have a homemade, rather than pre-poured, taste.
In practicing the fine art of cocktailing, many of these mixology masters are taking a note from the bartenders of a bygone era. At Pegu Club, famed mixologist Audrey Saunders has revived pre-Prohibition recipes for her meticulous exotic drinks (seriously, it can take up to 10 minutes to prepare each one) served up in a sexy, Burmese-inspired setting. Also drawing on Asian influences is Angel’s Share, a jazzy speakeasy tucked inside a Japanese restaurant–you won’t want to miss their Far East take on the Grasshopper. Named for a Prohibition-era art movement (not a mortuary), Death + Company is deadly serious about classic cocktails like martinis and Old Fashioneds.
New York apartment-style living doesn’t allow for “rumpus room” basements like they have in the 'burbs, but some of the hottest dance clubs in town have a “basement party” feel, situated as they are in subterranean locations. There’s just a tad more security than you’d find at a house party, though–be prepared for tough doors and long lines. Bottle service reservations are the best way to secure entrance to the exclusive, glam Meatpacking District club Tenjune, a below-ground spot where celeb DJs like Diddy and Kanye have been known to get the party started. Dungeon-like subMercer, in the basement of the The Mercer hotel, is notoriously difficult to find, but you'll be rewarded with a stylish scene and hot dance floor for your efforts.
Yet no matter how much New York nightlife gets remixed for the cool kids, there will always be spots that retain the feel of New York back in the day. The brooding bohemian watering hole White Horse Tavern was a home-away-from-home for early 20th century artists and writers (especially for Dylan Thomas, who drank away his life there). Author and artist Ludwig Bemelmans provided the inspiration for Bemelmans Bar, a swanky piano bar that revisits the 1930s with classic cocktails. King Cole Bar in The St. Regis New York also preserves Old World decadence; the famous Red Snapper cocktail (a version of the Bloody Mary) debuted here in 1934 and remains a top attraction.
But if you really want to experience how New York nightlife can be an extension of apartment-style living, why not go for cocktails at...an actual apartment? The Campbell Apartment is a glamorous cocktail spot hidden in Grand Central Terminal in the former private quarters of 1920s banker/tycoon John W. Campbell. It evokes a Gatsby-era pad with gorgeous mahogany woodwork, tapestry upholstery, and antique rugs, not to mention drinks like the classic Manhattan, one of the more perfect versions we've had.
Whether you decide to lounge in a luxe parlor, knock one back in a kickback pub or wine bar, head underground for gourmet drinks or celeb-studded dance floors, or travel back in time to a cocktailing heyday, you'll find ample reason not to hole up in your hotel room. In a city where nightlife spots are de-facto home additions, we can truly say: there's no place like home.
