    VIBE

Just across the street from the gilded opulence of the St. Regis’s Beaux-Arts façade is The Peninsula New York, housed in the restrained, stately premises of the 1905 Gotham Hotel. Much of the building’s original marble-and-mahogany grandeur has been restored, though recent renovations added an Asian-inspired rooftop lounge that seeks to transport guests to 1930s Shanghai rather than turn-of-the-century NYC. While the rooftop nightlife scene and fabulous ESPA spa have started to bring in well-connected young professionals, the classic Peninsula dignified-yet-pampering service and facilities ensure a largely mature, sophisticated class of guest.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

Classic Peninsula service, classic Peninsula luxury…and a spa that is positively divine. We could quite happily while away our NYC days being massaged, steamed, and beautified in the rooftop ESPA spa, only popping out occasionally for a splash in the pool or a sexy cocktail at Salon de Ning. But if we must head out, it’s good to know the designer retail mecca that is Fifth Avenue is only steps away.

    AMENITY WE LOVE

    The gorgeous spa by ESPA.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

Not all rooms have iPod hookups.

    GOOD TO KNOW

The Peninsula recently finished its latest round of refurbishments in 2010–if possible, try to book one of the updated guest rooms. Personal trainers are available in the fitness center. There is copious meeting and event space on site. 24-hour valet service available. The Peninsula is extremely child friendly, with kid-centered perks including child-sized robes and slippers, kid-friendly bubble bath, a kids’ room service menu, a library of children’s books and DVDs, complimentary cribs, and bottle warmers and sterilizers.
