    VIBE

Tucked away on a quiet, residential Upper East Side street, this 1920s Art Deco property blends discreetly into the surrounding row of elegant apartment buildings. The small, luxe lobby is so low key that it's more like a private foyer, and the elegant suites are so spacious and well-appointed that they’re virtually indistinguishable from the posh flats of the hotel's affluent neighbors. Drawn by the privacy and luxury of the surrounds, celebs and tycoons use The Lowell as a hideaway from the city’s madding crowds, dropping in sans entourage to the intimate lobby bar after a day in the limelight.

    GO HERE WITH

Significant other - for a private romantic retreat; family - to make the most of the spacious rooms and kitchenettes; yourself - to get away from it all in the middle of Manhattan

    WHY WE LIKE IT

The combination of boutique-style intimacy with the kind of elite luxury usually only found at the massive grand dame hotels is a unique treat. It’s an ideal spot for an escape into uppercrust Upper East Side living. If you do decide to venture out of your well-appointed hideaway, Madison Avenue shopping, Central Park, and Museum Mile are all close at hand.

    AMENITY WE LOVE

The spacious marble bathrooms are dreamy.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The staff can be a bit brusque if you don’t have the whiff of Old Money or celebrity about you. Also, the lobby, elevators, and hallways all feel a bit cramped and dimly lit.

    GOOD TO KNOW

If you’re into designer accommodations, try to book the Garden Suite, which was redesigned by the Obamas' White House decorator, Michael Smith. Amenities include twice daily maid service, complimentary daily The New York Times, and VOSS Water at turndown. Business center available.
