VIBE
From hosting Bogart and Bacall to being on the cover of the Eagle’s Hotel California, these posh pastel premises have seen more than their fair share of classic Hollywood moments. Though the hotel has been updated from its original 1912 design, it retains many of its most famous features, like the pink-and-mint stripe décor, sceney poolside cabanas, and the crowds of Hollywood movers and shakers. If you want to catch a glimpse of the latest starlet (or her agent…) this might be a good place to start. The rooms are fab with opulent marble bathrooms (many with Jacuzzis) and quirky retro touches, like original butler bells.
GO HERE WITH
The girls – for a spoiled-rotten spa trip and giggly star-spotting; significant other – for a glam getaway. We were there with a Purple Mom and had a blast too!
WHY WE LIKE IT
We love the classic Hollywood vibes–it’s the perfect balance of cool and luxe, without a hint of kitsch. We love love love that there is a diner/soda fountain in the basement (roll out of bed goodness–just get there early to avoid the wait), and the Polo Lounge is everything that Hollywood should be–classic, glam, but relaxed with excellent drinks. The small but luxurious spa downstairs completes the package.
AMENITY WE LOVE
The poolside terrace–the green-and-white striped loungers are some of the most desirable real estate in town.
WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE
Some say the service is too hoity-toity…but then, perhaps that comes with the territory.
GOOD TO KNOW
Specialty suites and bungalows have features like stone fireplaces, private entrances, and grand pianos. The Presidential Bungalow even has a private lap pool. Some rooms in the main building (alas, Purple did NOT spring for a famous bungalow) are right over the bar, so be careful to ask for a room in another section if you want to get to bed early (noise really does travel here)–we needed to switch. The Beverly Hills Hotel is part of the Dorchester Collection, which includes some of our favorite properties throughout the world like The Dorchester (London), Hotel Plaza Athenee (Paris), Le Meurice (Paris), Hotel Bel Air (Los Angeles, closed for construction until mid-2011), and The New York Palace (New York), among others.
