    VIBE

With a piano tinkling in the corner, slick 1940s black-on-black décor, and old-school fine dining settings, Le Caprice hasn’t lost a bit of its post-war glam aesthetic. Re-launched in the 1980s (after a short hiatus), it’s continued to draw upscale crowds peppered with celebs with its urbane ambiance, fabulous service, and delectable brasserie fare. The L-shaped space is small, and the décor is starting to show its years, but the beautiful people distract from such irritations.

    CROWD

Heavy-hitters from the business world mingle with artsy intellectuals, the society set, and romantic daters. Celebs often pop over after the theater.

    WHAT WE WOULD WEAR

It’s casual (ties aren’t required for men), but it’s at the upscale end of the casual spectrum. This is a good spot to flash a discreet-yet-recognizable designer handbag or heels. We’d go with something simple yet sophisticated, like a little black dress paired with some eye-catching accessories.

    WHY WE LIKE IT

It’s got a lovely, old-fashioned vibe, and the fantastic service makes you feel like a star. Recommended for dates, or with a small group of friends, and would work for an atmospheric business meal as well.

    WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

The decor is a little down at the heel, could be spiffed up a bit.

    GOOD TO KNOW

Although it’s showing its years, it remains as tough as ever to score a table here, so definitely don’t forget to reserve well in advance. You can now make reservations for the bar as well, which is a great choice if you’re dining alone or with one other companion. Being just down the road from the West End, this is a good choice for pre/post-theater dinners. They have dedicated menus for vegetarians and kids, and full roast dinners are available on Sunday afternoons. Le Caprice is controlled by Caprice Holdings, which also owns J Sheekey, Bam-Bou, Scott’s, Daphne’s, Rivington, and the Ivy.
