Expecting food as bland and stodgy as Queen Victoria? Bollocks to that. London has shed its reputation for underwhelming cuisine with a contemporary dining scene that is at once local and global, traditional and avant-garde.

Sure, you can still sit for high tea at The Dorchester or a porridge breakfast at The Wolseley. You can put on your fanciest duds for a continental dinner at Le Gavroche (though to us, the stuffy French establishment seemed too formal for even a special occasion). But you can also grab a saffron-scented curry at Brick Lane Indian/Pakistani spots like Tayyabs, elaborate dim sum at Chinese eateries such as Hakkasan, or a steaming bowl of udon at one of the many pan-Asian noodle bars that have cropped up like shiitakes.

For a mishmash of global offerings all in one place, try Harrods Food Halls–a haven of gourmet offerings inside the famed department store–or Borough Market, one of the largest wholesale fruit and vegetable markets in the world. Walk the Borough’s stalls, eating as you go, or stop in for a meal at Tapas Brindisa. Though the market’s been around since the Romans built London Bridge and occupied its current site for 250 years, a new Thameslink rail project in the vicinity has uprooted many of the merchants. Pay a visit before its historical integrity is compromised.

With so many international offerings, the Brits haven’t jettisoned their national cuisine entirely. Fish and chips–the Eliza Doolittle of British fare–has been lifted from its humble street food origins to the darling of the gastropub movement, paired with craft ales. And really, you'll find that offal (yes, we're talking organs and other typically cast-off parts of butchered animals) isn't so awful; foodie spots like St. John Bread and Wine celebrate the English tradition of nose-to-tail eating and elevate the likes of veal marrow, lamb's brain, pig head, and rabbit saddle (just don't think of it as "bunny back" and you'll be fine) to gourmet delicacies. Fresh seafood also abounds at chic spots like Tom Aikens and J Sheekey, where you shouldn’t pass up the spotted dick for dessert.

A little advance planning in the dining department will keep you from getting your knickers in a twist. If you’ve got a few quid to spare, queue up for a reservation at the venerable Gordon Ramsay at least two months in advance. And just be sure to sup on the early side–restaurants notoriously close by 11:00pm–otherwise you might find yourself out in the cold saying, “Oh, bugger!”
